Charles Bailey was born in Soham (Newmarket Q1-1895 3B:546), son of William and Ellen Jane BAILEY (née MURFET)

1901 census...Aged 6, Charley was at Windmill, Millers House, Fordham Road, Soham with his father William BAILEY [30] journeyman miller; his mother Ellen [31]; brother George [8] and sister Florence [1]. All were born in Soham

1911 census...Aged 16, Charley was at The Pen, Soham with his parents (father now miller's labourer); brothers George (miller's labourer) and Arthur [9]; sisters May [11], Doris [5] and Lily [2]. All the new children were born in Soham, but 2 of the 8 had died. The family later moved to Waterside, Soham, as recorded on the pension card..




He enlisted in Newmarket.
The 1st Battalion, Cambridgeshire Regiment spent a disproportionate length of time in the front line from 12th September 1916 to 3rd October 1916. After a brief spell in support they were back to attack the Schwaben Redoubt on 14th October, which, together with the 4th/5th Black Watch, they took and held. They suffered 213 casualties in the process, 50 being killed, of which 27 have no known grave.
